Transformational Programs for the Future We invite you to participate in the Institute of HeartMath’s outreach programs to meet the pressing needs in early childhood education, teacher retention, student dropout rates, medical science and healthy relationships. For funding opportunities, please contact Executive Director Katherine Floriano at 831-338-8717.
1. Heart-Smarts Program for Young Children Research has proven that by the time a child reaches the third grade it can be determined with 70% accuracy what the child will be like at age 20. HeartSmarts addresses children from ages 3-5. It will offer understanding of the role of the heart in emotional self-management. The skills learned will improve family and future relationships as well as academic performance. It is estimated this project will take two years and cost $750,000. The results will bring about positive change in the lives of thousands of despairing children. 2. Teacher Retention/Teacher Resiliency Research shows 50% of new teachers drop out within the first five years. It doesn’t have to be this way. This program is designed to reduce stress and thereby reduce the teacher dropout rate. The national rollout of this project requires development and implementation of The Resilient Educator curriculum, which will have a positive effect on thousands of teachers across the country. It is estimated this project will take two years and cost $2.5 million. The result will be happier teachers who stay in the profession. 3. Reducing Student Dropout Rate In 2000, there were 3.8 million 16- through 24-year-olds who were not enrolled in school and had not completed high school. Student dropouts are much more likely than graduates to be unemployed or underemployed, receive public assistance and engage in criminal activity: 80% of all prison inmates under age of 25 are high-school dropouts. It is estimated this project will take three years and cost $2.5 million. The result will be better-behaved, more academically proficient students who graduate high school and go on to higher education and more productive lives. 4. Electrophysiology of Intuition This research project will contribute to the development of a scientific explanation for intuition – specifically, how the body receives and processes information about objects or events distant in space or ahead in time. This will build an understanding of how and under what conditions intuition occurs, and thereby allow us to harness and develop its power for personal empowerment and advancements in medicine and science. This project will take three years and cost $3 million. 5. Global Outreach through Capacity Building To expand our outreach programs and address the needs of an ever-changing educational environment, we must periodically update our systems, redesign our Web site and hire skilled and caring personnel. With updated systems and new personnel we will become stronger, more sustainable and better able to address the future needs of students, teachers and parents. To accomplish this, we must hire personnel in the following areas: grant writing, Web site design, marketing and product development. To meet our Capacity Building goals, we need $600,000.
