The Coherent Heart: Heart-Brain Interactions, Psychophysiological Coherence, and the Emergence of System-Wide Order By Rollin McCraty, Ph.D., Mike Atkinson, Dana Tomasino, B.A., and Raymond Trevor Bradley, Ph.D.
The Coherent Heart is IHM's most comprehensive scientific monograph to date. It provides an in-depth understanding of the role of the heart role in the emergence of systemwide coherence and new research findings on how heart-brain interactions affect various aspects of cognitive performance. The Coherent Heart explores communication within and among the body's systems through the generation and transmission of rhythms and patterns in the nervous and hormonal systems. Using the pattern of the heart's rhythmic activity as the primary physiological marker, six different modes of psychophysiological function are identified, distinguished by their physiological, mental, and emotional correlates. Building on these empirical findings, IHM's research on the psychophysiology of emotions is synthesized for the first time in a typology—a conceptual "map"—of psychophysiological interaction, which is presented graphically. Explored in depth are the characteristics and benefits of the psychophysiological coherence mode, associated with sustained positive emotions and a global shift to increased synchronization and harmony in psychophysiological processes.
Topics Covered How coherence aids in pain reduction, the interactions between heart rhythms and respiration, and how heart coherence affects emotional experience and hormones such as cortisol and oxytocin. Of particular interest is the thorough discussion of how coherence improves cognitive performance, which highlights how the heart and brain interact to affect cognitive processes. This section provides a review of past research on heart-brain interactions, presents new research data on heart coherence, and introduces a new hypothesis regarding the influence of "macro-scale" patterns of heart activity on cognition.
This monograph is intended primarily for the researchers, medical professionals, students of psychophysiology and related fields, and laypeople who desire a deeper understanding of heart-brain interactions and the benefits of heart coherence.

Heart’s Role in EmotionsA favorite among many, the Appreciative Heart monograph is easy to read. This monograph is an overview of Institute of HeartMath’s research on the physiological correlates of positive emotions and the science underlying two core HeartMath techniques which supports Heart-Based Living. The heart's connection with love and other positive emotions has survived throughout millennia and across many diverse cultures. New empirical research is providing scientific validation for this age-old association. This 21-page monograph offers a comprehensive understanding of the Institute of HeartMath's cutting-edge research exploring the heart's central role in emotional experience. Described in detail is physiological coherence, a distinct mode of physiological functioning, which is generated during sustained positive emotions and linked with beneficial health and performance-related outcomes. The monograph also provides steps and applications of two HeartMath techniques, Freeze-Frame® and Heart Lock-In®, which engage the heart to help transform stress and produce sustained states of coherence. Data from outcome studies are presented, which suggest that these techniques facilitate a beneficial repatterning process at the mental, emotional and physiological levels.
The Appreciative Heart: The Psychophysiology of Positive Emotions and Optimal Functioning:
Content includes: Definition of Terms, Positive Emotions and Optimal Functioning, Heart’s Role in Emotion, Physiological Correlates of Heartfelt Positive Emotions, Emotional Management: The Missing Dimension, Tools and Techniques to Promote Emotional and Physiological Coherence, Freeze-Frame and Heart Lock-In Techniques, Intervention Studies: Related Outcomes in Health, Organizations and Education and Conclusion.
The Energetic Heart: Bioelectromagnetic Interactions Within and Between PeopleBy Rollin McCraty, Ph.D
The Heart's Electromagnetic FieldDid you know your physiological systems are interacting in subtle ways and the electromagnetic signal produced by your heart is registered in the brain waves of people around you? Or that your physiological responses sync up with your mate's during empathetic interactions? The Energetic Heart explains physiological coherence and the bioelectromagnetic interactions within and between people. You will discover why the heart's electromagnetic field is believed to act as a central synchronizing signal within the body, an important carrier of emotional information and a key mediator of energetic interactions between people. This 20-page monograph explores research on bioelectromagnetic interactions and how living and acting from a coherent heart state can affect those around us.
